Android TV App

Videopass

Videopass is a Japanese video streaming app and mainly focuses on the local market. This app can be run on Android, iOS, web, tvOS and Android TV platforms, so we must take into consideration the native app design guidelines in the beginning of the development. At the same time, we built the product design language to ensure the users have a consistent cross-platform experience.

What's our design mission in TV experience

At the early stage, we clarified the difference between the mobile and TV experience. The most crucial one is the Lean Back Experience, which aims to provide a more relaxing and leisure 10-foot experience for users to enjoy a TV show or movie on the big screen.

Android TV Material Design is explained explicitly in their guideline, therefore, we adapts Material Design guideline in our product development to provide users the most delightful and entertaining TV experience at home.

In 2016, the app was rolled out and then we started to collect and track the data (see Product design with data). This continuous process helps us to understand the users behavior, and discover the problems, and to consistently improve our client's product.

Design patterns

Android TV guide mentions the app's general structure should follow four modalities:

  • Browse View

  • Detail View

  • Consumption View

  • In-app Search

So the design patterns are considered throughout the app's structures based on guideline to ensure the browsing and behavioral experience consistently.
